Sergei Vinogradov 1869–1938

Here’s another artist whose lifetime, like Konstantin Yuon‘s, spanned the dramatic transition from Tsarist Russia to the communist Soviet Union. You’ll find his paintings categorised in books as being part of the genre of Russian or Soviet Impressionism. The Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow held an exhibition of Vinogradov’s work last year.  The Moscow Times published an article about it at the time – annoyingly (I think!) titled ‘An artist Russia forgot’. I’m sure the whole of Russia didn’t forget him! Perhaps it’s a reference to the fact that, after a trip to the USA in 1924, Vinogradov did not return to live in Russia but spent the rest of his life in Latvia.

I’m always drawn to paintings of interiors and I find Vinogradov’s depictions of the sunlit rooms of various rather luxurious dachas particularly appealing.
