2015 Travels – Moravia
In May I went with a small group from the UK Textile Society on a tour of Moravia – one of the three historical regions of the Czech Republic (the others being Bohemia and Czech Silesia). I’ve already written blog entries about one of the fascinating towns we visited – Olomouc, and its astronomical clock – but here are some more pictures of the trip in the form of a photo book I’ve put together. The handsome city appearing in the last few pages is Brno – the capital of Moravia. A highlight of the tour was visiting the Modernist Villa Tugendhat in Brno, designed by Mies van der Rohe. I’ve added a link to the virtual tour but really you have to be there to appreciate the beauty of every material and detail in the house – from the light switches to the silver-lined keyholes on the desk drawers to the extraordinary onyx wall that survived the ravages of the 20th-century, hidden behind bricks and undetected by successive armies of occupation.
A textile-related highlight was a visit to the Slovacke Museum in Uherské Hradiště. Here are some images showing examples of folk dress from that area.
It’s nice to see pictures of Olomouc. It’s such a beautiful and important historical city that should be better known. Your pictures of the clock are particularly good.
