Happy Christmas (more literally – ‘With the birth of Christ’)

I like this pre-revolution card because it shows the nanny in a wealthy household wearing a smart version of peasant dress, which was the traditional attire for her role.

Today – 7 January – is Christmas Day, as celebrated by the Russian and Eastern Orthodox Church, who observe the old Gregorian calendar. To mark the occasion, here’s a video of a live performance of This Holy Night (Эта ночь святая) by my favourite Russian folk rock band – Otava Yo.
